About me

midwife, photographer, doula

My name is Rae (she/they), a queer midwife and artist in the Seattle area of the Duwamish lands.

I bring to birth work over a decade of perinatal experience and years of professional practice as a midwife, having attended hundreds of births across homes, birth centers, and hospitals. I was a resident midwife of a busy birth center before starting my own practice supporting individuals and families in the process of preconception, assisted insemination, and early pregnancy.

I am now accepting clients for birth doula work, with analog photography at the center of my offerings. While I am not currently catching babies, my midwifery foundation deeply informs how I show up—as a doula and as a photographer—attuned to the rhythms of labor, the language of bodies, and the emotional landscape of becoming a family.

I approach my practice in care work as an artist. Photography is how I witness, interpret, and honor the complexity of birth and family life. Through a creative, relational approach, I offer presence that is grounded, respectful, and observant, creating images that do more than document—in the words of photographer Sally Mann, “Photography, for me, has always been a way of saying: this mattered, this was worth seeing, this was loved.”

In addition to birth work, I also offer family photography and work with those in the intimate, often liminal process of making a baby—the abstract spaces where identity and memory blur.

About analog photography

35mm, 120mm, Polaroid, Super 8

I choose analog photography (film) because it plays an active role in the creative process. Film mirrors the unpredictability of life, the alchemy of memory, the way light and shadow, blur and texture converge to shape an experience. My approach to analog photography, much like my work as a doula, is not about precision or control. I allow the physical medium to guide what can be seen and felt. Film has the power to interpret for us, impressionistic art.
